The summer 2009 season flew past and the final two vessels of the Jet Express fleet were winterized on Monday, December 12, 2009.  The Jet Express Service Team battled snow, cold and wind as they backed the Jet Express III & IV up a narrow slip into Brand's Marina, off the Portage River, Port Clinton, OH.  The slip will be bubbled to prevent the water from freezing and damaging the vessels.  The Jet Express I & II were pulled from the water last month.  2010 information will be posted soon.  The new season will kick off from Port Clinton at the end of April.

6th Annual "Closing of the Island" Fundraiser a success!

Tuesday, 29 September 2009 10:43

fordyachtclub
The 6th annual Closing of the Island Charter departed Ford Yact Club, Grosse Ile, MI on Saturday September 26, 2009.  Two trips were made to Put-in-Bay, with one group returning Saturday evening and the other returning Sunday afternoon.  This annual event supports the Opening of the Island (OOTI) event held every spring in Michigan, and other community events supported by the OOTI committee.

Ford Yacht Club Past Commodore and Opening of the Island Chairman,  Russ Vaughn, desribes the event as follows:

The Opening of the Island (OOTI), is an event that celebrates the start of the boating season and takes place the second weekend after Memorial Day. A function that began 21 years ago, was originally hosted by 3 boating clubs of the island of Grosse Ile, Michigan; Elba Mar Boat Club, Ford Yacht Club and Grosse Ile Yacht Club. Another 5 boating clubs have since joined as host clubs, Great Lakes Steel Boat Club, Seaway Boat Club, Sunseeker's Boating Club, West River Yacht and Cruising Club and Wyandotte Yacht Club. The highlight of the weekend is the introduction of current and past officers representing all of the boating organizations in the Western Basin of Lake Erie from Michigan, Ohio and Canada. A boat parade and blessing of the fleet follows with 65 - 70 boats participating. The current Commodores, Vice Commodores and Rear Commodores  lead the parade upon the vessels assigned to them. Fleet Captains and Past Commodores will follow on their assigned vessels.  Each of the VIP vessels are fully stocked with food and beverage, which has challenged the committee to generate funds to pay for it all.

Six years ago, in 2004, the committee pursued the idea of chartering the Jet Express as a fundraiser. With 300 tickets sold, the Jet Express departed Ford Yacht Club on an early fall Saturday for a fun "Day at the Bay". With such a tremendous success of that Jet Express fundraiser, the next 2 years, the committee chartered for 2 trips and deemed the event as the Closing of the Island, (COTI). Many of the repeat participants expressed how much fun it would be if they could spend the night. The committee was up for the challenge.  They secured overnight accommodations for 130 guest rooms and worked out the details with the Jet Express. Now, in it's 6th year of partnership with the Jet Express and the 3rd year of the overnight trip, this fundraising event is as big as ever, selling out every year. With the income generated from those fundraising efforts, the OOTI celebration continues to be very successful. None of this would be possible if it wasn't for the generosity of the management of the Jet Express.

The OOTI committee is made up from a group of active boaters that volunteer many hours for the betterment of the boating community. In May of 2009,  four people from the OOTI committee, with the help of the Jet Express, orchestrated the inaugural Inter-Lakes Yachting Association (I-LYA), "Spend a day at The Bay" from Sindbad's Restaurant in Detroit fundraiser. I-LYA is a 116 year old organization that's "basic purpose is the protection and promotion of the interest of boat owners and water sports fans", and has held yachting regatta's at Put In Bay for over 100 years. Again, the Jet Express went beyond expectations with numerous donations to assure another very successful fundraiser.

Our friends at the Jet Express has contributed to many off the water events also. Another function with representation from OOTI, is an annual "Toys for Tots" Christmas party. The event provides Christmas gifts to children of family's that are experiencing difficult times and makes sure no child goes with out. Again, the Jet Express steps up and provides items such as shirts and tickets for a raffle so the organizers may purchase additional gifts.

As you can see, the people of the Jet Express are more than just your transportation provider, they are also a great neighbor. Just like so many of us that take pride in our volunteer efforts, the management of the Jet Express takes pride in their efforts to provide for the communities that support them.

This is only three stories of the Jet Express's generosity, there are many more, not only in Michigan, but in their home state of Ohio. Our OOTI committee wishes to express a very big THANK YOU to the Jet Express for all of your efforts in making all of our events a success.

Ford Yacht Club Past Commodore,

Opening of the Island Chairman,

Russ Vaughn
